RFID Tags
There are two broad categories of RFID tags - Passive tags and Active tags.
Passive tags do not transmit a signal but rely on the reader to provide the carrier wave for backscatter modulation as well as
the energy to power the tag circuits. They may optionally incorporate a battery to help boost the operating range.
Active tags always have their own power source and contain a transmitter.
Main differences between active and passive tags
Active Tags
- Are battery or external power operated (like a cell phone)
- Have high operating range and can include complex sensors
- Are more expensive than passive tags
- Need maintenance (e.g. battery exchange)
Passive Tags
- Get their power from the reader's RF field
- Do not need maintenance
- Are cheaper and more robust than active tags
